THE REFERRAL NETWORK
A referral is a loan of a patient. Most are never repaid.
A diagnostic centre sends a patient to a cardiologist. The cardiologist sees them. The report goes into a file. The centre that sent them never learns what happened — so the next time, they send somebody else.
A referral network closes the loop: the provider who sent the patient gets the outcome back. Drapto's network carries the referral, the report and the acknowledgement between providers. No fee is paid to anyone for sending a patient.
Where a referral actually stops
Four failures, and only one of them is clinical.
No slip was issued
The intent existed in the consultation and nowhere else. Nothing was written, so nothing can be chased.
The slip was issued and never used
The patient took a piece of paper to a place they had to find themselves, and did not go.
The patient was seen, no report came back
The receiving provider did the work. The report went into their own record and stopped there.
The report came back too late to matter
It arrived after the next consultation, so the sender made a decision without it.
What the network actually does
Carry three things between providers, and nothing else.
The referral
Who, to whom, and the clinical reason. Raised inside Drapto by the sending provider, visible to the receiving one.
The acknowledgement
The receiving provider confirms the patient arrived. The sender stops wondering.
The report
Attached against the original referral, so it lands beside the reason it was asked for.
What it will never do
Stated plainly, because the ethics regulations are not vague about it.
Pay for a referral
No fee, commission, rebate, revenue share or reward reaches anyone for sending a patient. IMC (Professional Conduct) Regulations 2002 cl. 6.4 and the NMC Professional Conduct Regulations 2023 both prohibit fee-splitting for referrals, and the exposure lands on the practitioner's registration.

There is no paid placement and no ordering by anything a provider can buy.
Show the patient to anyone who did not treat them
A referral opens the record to the receiving provider for that episode. Nobody else.
