Finding and merging duplicates
Duplicates are made at the desk, usually by a phone number typed with a country code one day and without it the next, or by a name spelt two ways.

How they are found
Phone numbers are normalised to their last ten digits and held that way, so the format they were typed in stops mattering. Names are compared allowing for the usual transliteration differences.
Merging
- Review the pairBoth records are shown side by side, with everything that differs highlighted.
- Choose the surviving recordUsually the one with more history. The other UHID is kept as an alias, so a search for it still works.
- ConfirmVisits, prescriptions, results and bills move across. Nothing is deleted.
- If it was wrongThe merge is recorded and can be reversed.
Nothing merges automatically
A wrongly merged record puts one person’s allergies on another person’s chart. That risk is never worth the convenience.
