Proportionate deduction applies the ratio of entitled room rent to actual room rent against associated charges. If entitlement is ₹4,000 and the room is ₹6,000, the payable ratio is 66.7%, and surgeon fees, OT, nursing and investigations are each reduced to that share. Pharmacy, implants and consumables are exempt under many policies.
The arithmetic
Ratio = entitled room rent ÷ actual room rent. Applied per associated head, not to the bill total, because the exempt heads have to be pulled out first.
This is why the visible room difference understates the loss so badly — a ₹2,000 nightly gap becomes a one-third reduction across the most expensive lines on the bill.
What is usually exempt
Pharmacy and consumables, implants and prosthetics, and in many policies diagnostics performed outside the room. The exemption list is contract-specific and worth loading per payer rather than assuming.
Assuming a charge is exempt when it is not is the more expensive error, because it is discovered at settlement.
Where it should run
At admission. Once the stay is complete the number is arithmetic and the only remaining question is who absorbs it.
